Originally known as “Springville,” this community was established in the wake of the Georgia Gold Rush. While the flurry of gold prospecting amounted to little success, the town continued to grow over the years. Drawing inspiration from the area’s seven springs and its black, mineral-laden sands resembling gunpowder, Springville eventually came to be called Gunpowder Springs, then simply “Powder Springs” in 1859. As nearby Atlanta expanded over the decades, this community eventually found new popularity as a convenient suburb.

Historic Downtown Powder Springs—The heartbeat of the community, the historic downtown area is home to numerous shops and dining opportunities, while the Old Towne Square hosts numerous community events throughout the year.
Ford Center Campus—The cultural and community hub of the city, this downtown complex is named for a prominent citizen, Coach George E. Ford. The campus includes the Patricia E. Vaughn Cultural Arts Center, a reception hall, Veterans Memorial Gardens and the public library.
Seven Springs Water Park—This county-run park sits on the north side of Powder Springs within the Wild Horse Creek Park. It includes an outdoor pool and water park open during the warm months.
Cobb County BMX—Also located in Wild Horse Creek Park, this dirt bike track hosts racing events throughout the year.
Bike and Recreation Trails—A network of biking/walking trails around the community encourages people to enjoy the outdoors. These trails also connect with the 59-mile Silver Comet Trail that runs between Smyrna and the Alabama border.
Six Flags White Water—Located about 13 miles west-northwest of Powder Springs, this popular amusement park offers thrill rides, water rides and fun for the whole family.
Six Flags Over Georgia—Powder Springs is one of the few communities with local access to two Six Flags locations. This one is located 12 miles east via Interstate-20.

The nearest shopping center options for Powder Springs are clustered along the East-West Connector on the east side of town — most notably the East-West Commons, home to major retailers like Lowe’s, Bealls Outlet, Target, TJ Maxx, Ross and more. A few miles in the other direction in Hiram along US-278, you’ll also find a cluster of shopping centers around Hiram Pavilion, featuring retailers like J.C. Penney, Kohl’s, Marshall’s and others.

Airports—The nearest major airport to Powder Springs is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, located about 30 miles to the southeast. Serving more than 100 million passengers annually, Atlanta International surpassed Chicago’s O’Hare several years ago as the world’s busiest airport.
Public Transportation—Powder Springs is served by CobbLinc, Cobb County’s bus service with routes across the county. Bus service to MARTA and downtown Atlanta is also available from the Powder Springs Park & Ride at 5100 Powder Springs Dallas Road.
Major Roads and Interstates—Main arteries through Powder Springs include Richard D. Sailors Parkway, Powder Springs Dallas Road, Brownsville Road, Marietta Street and US-28. Access to the Atlanta’s Perimeter Loop (I-285) and other parts of the Atlanta Metro can be found via the East-West Connector to the east, or by US-78 or I-20 to the south.

The vast majority of residences in Powder Springs are single-family homes, about 30 percent of which have been built within the past 20 years. As a suburb out of the way of some of the current rapid-growth areas of the city, Powder Springs also enjoys some of the most affordable home prices in the metro area, enabling home buyers to get more home for the money. The median home value here is about $187,000. A sizeable number of homes are available here from the low- to mid-$100s up to $300, while a few larger homes exist in the $500k range and above.
